POSITION TITLE:      Addictions/Conflict Resolution Counsellor

DEPARTMENT:           Transition Support and Community Corrections Programs

DEADLINE:                 Position open until filled

SALARY:                     $43,875 per annum

EFFECTIVE DATE:      One-year term with possible extension.

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Addictions/Conflict Resolution Counsellor will be responsible for providing confidential addictions counseling, anger management, counseling interventions for gang members, conflict resolution, relapse prevention, education and support to individuals and their families and for promoting healthy lifestyles and healthy choices, with a holistic focus on healing, aftercare, relapse prevention and reintegration into community. He will work in close collaboration with reintegration workers, first nation communities, health care professionals, families, victims and elders and a variety of other individuals and agencies to help clients successfully reintegrate back into their communities.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

The Addictions/Conflict Resolution Counsellor reports directly to the Community Corrections Program Supervisor and to work closely with the Transition Support Supervisor and staff.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Minimum Diploma/Degree and certification in addictions or violent behavioral counseling and experience that provides the required knowledge, ability and skills in addictions or other negative behaviors as well as knowledge and training as a life skills coach;
  2. Provide programing or counseling with the purpose disrupting gang recruitment and re-engagement of vulnerable individuals through a series of targeted interventions and strategies aimed at increasing resilience and life skills, along with building appropriate supports, strengthening cultural/community connectedness and health and wellness.
  3. Familiarity with data collection software and other specific software;
  4. Experience or ability in individual or group counseling and facilitation;
  5. Demonstrated understanding of the global 12 Core Functions of Addictions Counseling;
  6. Experience working in residential settings;
  7. Practical understanding of Indigenous historical and cultural contexts, including traditional concepts of family and kin, healing, and relationships;
  8. Exposure to or direct work history with principles of evidence-based practice, client centered, care and harm reduction models, as well as dealing with trauma;
  9. Demonstrated ability to support Indigenous participants in a culturally safe manner including flexible and client-centered programs;
  10. The ability to convey verbal and written information to supervisor, client’s family or extended family, victims and community agencies and other organizations effectively and efficiently;
  11. Strong time management and organizational skills;
  12. Maintain a healthy lifestyle free of addiction to alcohol, drugs, gambling and other addictions;
  13. Proven ability to work collaboratively and to be comfortable to work within the team concept;
  14. Knowledge of Transition Support/Aftercare practices and philosophies an asset;
