About the Opportunity

An exciting opportunity exists for a Band Administrator to join the Aroland First Nation in Aroland, ON, on a full-time basis.

Reporting directly to the Chief and Council of Aroland First Nation, the Band Administrator will be responsible for managing the Nation's administrative and financial operations, and ensuring the seamless delivery of programs and services to its members. This includes implementing policies and procedures to support the successful execution of these programs and services.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Attending and coordinating Chief & Council meetings, providing relevant information and recommendations, implementing decisions, and acting as a liaison between Administration and Chief & Council
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of Aroland First Nation policies and procedures and recommending amendments to Chief & Council
  • Overseeing the delivery of core services such as Governance, Administration, Health, Education, Ontario Works, and Operations & Maintenance
  • Working with Program Administrators to improve operations, streamline work processes, and provide quality services to our members
  • Supervising Program Administrators and carrying out training, coaching, disciplinary procedures, and annual performance reviews of staff
  • Preparing proposals and long-range plans, such as Strategic Plans, Capital Projects, Economic Development Strategies, etc
  • Reviewing and signing Program Administrators' time sheets and travel claims
  • Providing workable solutions and attempt to resolve staff disputes
  • Preparing an annual budget in consultation with Finance Manager and Program Administrators, for approval by Chief & Council
  • Monitoring Capital Projects, participating in the development and negotiation of contracts with contractors and consultants, and ensuring all departments operate within budget
  • Producing external and internal written correspondence, supporting the auditing process, authorizing the use of legal consultants, and ensuring asset safeguarding
  • Performing assignments in accordance with professional and federal laws and Aroland First Nations approved Policies and Procedures
  • Building relationships with community members and coordinating follow-up action in response to community complaints or problems
  • Managing relationships with funding agencies and other external stakeholders
  • Educating and informing community members of First Nation issues through flyers and newsletters

About You

For this role, you must have a post-secondary Diploma or Degree in Business, Public Administration, Finance, or another applicable field as well as a minimum of 3 years of experience in a senior management role, ideally within a First Nation or a Municipality. Previous experience in band management/administration would be preferred.

The ideal candidate will also join us with the following:

  • Driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Ability to provide a clear criminal record check
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong financial acuity and understanding of accounting principles
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, accounting software, and computer systems
  • Experience in human resource management and familiarity with the Canada Labour Code
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
