Description

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Cultural Coordinator is responsible for the development of the Cultural Room at Miywasin Friendship Centre; implementing cultural programming; collecting and maintaining artifacts for display; researching archives, and collecting historical Métis data on Medicine Hat, Cypress Hills and area; preparation of resources and provide interpretations of Indigenous artifacts and customs to individuals and groups; set up tepee village cultural camps; instruct in marking crafts; organize and facilitate Cultural Events for the community.

Responsibilities include:

* Following all protocols as outlined in the Miywasin Policies and Procedures Manual and ensure ethical practices are followed;

* Ensure client intake protocols are followed as outlines in Miywasin Policies and Procedures Manual;

* Maintain files on clients including referrals to other agencies or professionals;

* Keep complete and confidential statistics on all clients; Provide funders with reports as outlined in the contract agreements;

* Evaluate, develop and implement programs to assist clients on their healing journeys through culturally appropriate practices, i.e. men’s and women’s sweats, cultural healing retreats, Bannock and Tea. Drum Circle, weekly talking/sharing circles, access to Smudge and medicines, etc;

* Support healing plans and access to Indigenous ways of knowledge and healing within the ARCH Project and the programs participants that may include: Smudge, access to medicines, sharing circles, connect to Elders and/or Knowledge Holders, and sweats;

* Liaise with Elders and/or Knowledge Sharer for support;

* Work with the Miywasin Counselling Team to assist clients to maintain housing and supports;

* Promote the program to other service agencies for referrals;

* Incorporate Indigenous ways of evaluation, such as First Person Stories;

* Evaluate and develop projects and programs as required, while promoting Miywasin Friendship Centre programs;

* Cooperate with staff and assist in organizing and implementing annual and special events and Traditional Trails programming;

Skills and Competencies

* Knowledge of Indigenous history, culture and communities

* Knowledge of Indigenous traditional skills

* Public engagement and presentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

* Post-secondary education in a related field (i.e. Indigenous Studies, Education) and/or minimum two years employment working in a related field or with an Indigenous Organization.

* Active involvement in the Indigenous community and knowledgeable of various community organizations.

* Excellent computer skills.

* Knowledgeable in making crafts and/or willing to learn.

* A good understanding of the diversity, customs and traditions of Indigenous peoples.

* Must have a valid driver's license, hold a valid first-aid certificate or be willing to obtain, be bondable, and supply a clean criminal record check and CWIS check. Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

* Outdoor camping experience, tepee raising and survival skills an asset.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $4,000.00 per month
