The Mustard Seed, a non-profit organization, is currently seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Day Program Shelter Worker in Medicine Hat. As a Day Program Shelter Worker, you will play a critical role in enhancing the visibility and relationship building of our organization to make our locations safe and welcoming for community participants, donors, and volunteers. The Mustard Seed provides basic services – food, clothing and housing, and support services – education and employment, to those living in poverty within British Columbia and Alberta.
- Location: Medicine Hat, AB
- Position Type: Casual and part-time positions available
- Reporting to: Basic Services Manager
- Schedule: Shifts 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, with flexibility required
Preference will be given to applicants who have greater availability, can work multiple shifts per week, and are available on weekends.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Partake in the very important work of building trusted relationships with the most vulnerable citizens who access the programs and services at The Mustard Seed in Medicine Hat
- Ensure that there is an enhanced visible presence, both internally and externally, throughout the property. Perceiving and responding to opportunities that will optimize safety, and build community through positive interactions.
- Supervise The Mustard Seed building access, greeting the guests accessing services at frontline and be the first point of contact to resolve confrontational situations
- Monitor guest activities within and surrounding TMS properties, providing crisis intervention as required
- Respond quickly to individuals in crisis, including but not limited to physical or mental health concerns, anger and aggression, and interpersonal crises. The worker must identify the crisis, minimize the harm to the individual and others, use de-escalation skills and assist the individual to explore healthy options
- Model healthy relationships with community participants and volunteers through listening, advising, and providing appropriate referrals
- Assist community participants in accessing The Mustard Seed services available in the programs and activities
- Greet and ensure volunteers and donors are treated with excellence and appreciation
- Receive and track gift in kind donations and provide receipt of donations when requested
- Support front line activities, including overseeing the operation of the kitchen, providing meal service for community participants
- Willing to support programs, special events, and/or other projects as assigned
- Participate in all staff training and attend meetings and training as assigned
- Keep all client information confidential
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- A passion to be part of ending homelessness and poverty in Canada
- Diploma/certificate in relevant discipline is considered an asset
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think creatively
- Familiarity with the community and resources in Medicine Hat is an asset
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Crisis intervention and conflict resolution are daily occurrences for this role
- The working environment for this position requires moderate amounts of walking, climbing, standing, sitting, lifting, carrying, and daily interactions with colleagues and guests
- This position is often fast-paced, and requires moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information and problem solve
- This position requires training in usage of a two-way radio communications; MS Office based computer programming, as well as the HMIS database system, FDARP, FOIP, First aid, NVCI, and SafeTALK
