Mission Statement
The Coaldale Public Library provides access to educational and recreational services to meet the changing needs of our community. The Library creates a welcoming and supportive environment while providing quality service, resources, and opportunities to meet the needs of patrons.
The Board of Trustees of the Coaldale Public Library invites individuals with the following qualifications to apply for the full-time permanent position of Head Librarian.
Reporting to the Library Board the Head Librarian is responsible for the following
Library Board: Supports the Board members by providing information, regular reports, and professional expertise; acts as a liaison between the board and the staff; works together with the Board in obtaining adequate funds for library operations.
Administration: Manages the day-to-day operations of the library; implements policy based on Board direction; oversees the management of the library collection including acquisitions and de-selection.
Personnel Administration: Takes responsibility for hiring, supervising, evaluating, and dismissing staff; accepts responsibility for staff training and performance; establishes and maintains personnel files.
Planning: Prepares long- and short-term program plans and proposals in consultation with the board, staff, volunteers, and other community organizations; suggests policy to be set by the Board; oversees the planning and implementation of library programs and services; assesses needs for new programs; evaluates program achievements.
Financial Management: Prepares and submits draft the annual budgets to the executive of the Board; administers library funds according to the approved budget; establishes and maintains procedures for bookkeeping and fiscal control.
Public Relations: Promotes increased public awareness of the library; ensures effective representation of the library to the community.
Skill Level and Qualifications
Education: MLIS preferred, but equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered; possess willingness to expand knowledge by participating in relevant professional development seminars, conferences and courses.
Experience: Experience in developing, implementing and evaluating library programs and work procedures; experience in supervision and management of staff; familiarity with collection development best practices; knowledge of trends in library service delivery; demonstrated financial management skills; experience working with Boards an asset.
Personal Attributes: Effective interpersonal skills are required in order to work effectively with board members, staff, volunteers, and the public; excellent verbal and written communication skills; self-motivation.
Computer skills: Knowledge of computerized library circulation systems; proficient in Microsoft office, social media, desktop publishing and basic website maintenance; ability to assist public in using personal computers and devices on local area network.
Salary
Salary range is $60,588.00 - $69,606.00 commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is for 37.5 hours per week including some evening and weekend work. A comprehensive benefits package is also provided.
