Medicine Hat College’s Indigenous Engagement & Student Supports department are inviting applications for a regular, full-time Indigenous Student Specialist (Student Services Specialist I). This is an on-site position based at our Medicine Hat College campus.
A little about the role:
The primary areas of responsibility for this position are providing First Nation, Metis and Inuit (Indigenous) students a welcoming and supportive environment, and to assist in their transition into MHC. In collaboration with the Student Financial Aid, and other student support offices, this position provides assistance in securing funding and other academic, personal, learning, mental health and cultural supports for Indigenous students continued success. This position is also critical in the organization of cultural events that help educate and inform all MHC students, staff and faculty about cultural awareness, respect and inclusiveness as well as in building relationships and engagement between the college and the indigenous communities within the MH region.
As a successful applicant you will have:
- Bachelor degree in Indigenous Relations, Education, Social Work, Psychology or other related field or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
- Minimum 2 years related experience
- Valid Drivers License
- An understanding of the history, cultural values, traditions, beliefs and protocol of the Indigenous of South-eastern Alberta. Familiarity with funding programs for Indigenous students. The ability to serve as an appropriate role model for students
- Knowledge of principles, practices, and learning methods of FNMI communities and barriers facing FNMI students.
Terms of Employment:
Hours of Work: 35 hours per week
