Position Title: Shift Lead & Member Engagement Position

Location: YMCA Downtown Branch and YMCA South Ridge Branch

Status: Full time

Salary: $35,880/year

Currently, the YMCA of Medicine Hat serves over 10,000 people in Medicine Hat and surrounding communities, the YMCA of Medicine Hat has a staff complement of more than 180 people, combined with more than 100 volunteers and an operating budget of $6.5 million, the YMCA of Medicine Hat offers services and programs at 2 recreation centres (Downtown and South Ridge), 2 employment centres (Medicine Hat and Brooks) and 13 licensed childcare programs.

What does this role look like at YMCA Medicine Hat?

1.The Shift Lead will:

  • Be committed to exceptional customer service and member engagement
  • Have positive interactions with members throughout the building; never just walk by a member.
  • Model YMCA mission and core values always.
  • Provide front line support and assistance to the facility team and departments as required.
  • Duty Managers are expected to maintain a high profile in the facility, to:

monitor delivery of service and programs in all areas, to respond to and prevent service issues and complaints, to circulate throughout the facility on a consistent basis, to aid in the delivery in front line service objectives (for example tours).

  • Ensure all department areas conform and meet YMCA SAM 2.1 standards and expectations.
  • Ensure the safety and security of the building, staff, and volunteers.
  • Not leave the YMCA premises without designating an alternate DM.
  • Conduct hourly tours of the building, to ensure that the building is clean, safe, and secure, and free of clutter including change rooms.
  • Submit any comments/complaints to the appropriate staff for follow up
  • Responsible for Risk Management – respond to and/or coordinate emergency procedures when an incident or accident occurs.
  • Assume full control of the building in the event of an emergency requiring the evacuation of the facility.
  • Be accessible and available to respond to concerns/issues as required.
  • Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner
  • Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with staff, volunteers, and members.

2.The Membership Services Representative will:

  • Demonstrates appropriate behaviors in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association. Meet and exceed customers’ expectations in all service aspects at the Member Services & Sales Desk
  • Complete all membership/program related duties with accuracy
  • Accurately complete all transactions, payments, cash-outs, and balancing
  • Communicate a large quantity of information clearly and concisely in person and over the telephone by understanding the organizational structure of the YMCA Medicine Hat
  • Develop and maintain smooth cooperative working relations with all staff and volunteers
  • Work in a team environment to achieve optimal collective results

3.Fitness Centre Monitor

  • Assists members to achieve their personal health and fitness related goals through education and suggested exercise programs, while building positive and engaging relationships.
  • Ensures outstanding programs and service are provided in a warm, friendly, clean, and safe environment.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment during shifts and to report any repairs or work orders to management.
  • Provide a strong presence on the strength and conditioning floor, engaging with and assisting members, answering questions, providing youth orientations and role modeling positive behaviors. Show members how to use the cardio equipment and strength and conditioning machines.
  • Participates regularly in educational seminars/workshops to increase knowledge pertaining to the fitness and health industry.
  • Provides support/assistance to delivery of Individual Conditioning Programs and fitness classes and the delivery of other programs as a substitute as required.


  • Cleaning of change rooms
  • Vacuuming/mopping the building
  • Cleaning equipment
  • Helping with set up and take down of equipment for rentals
  • Empty all garbage
  • Filling supplies

5.Youth Program Worker

  • Generate an environment of excellence where youth can engage, learn, develop skills, and make new friends
  • Ensure you are engaging in effective communication with parents, guardians, staff, volunteers, and children while modeling the YMCA values
  • Coverage for birthday parties, climbing wall, childminding, youth programs and special events as required
  • Always provide a safe and positive environment following all child protection guidelines.
  • All other duties as assigned

Candidates must be able to work days, evenings, and weekends and must be 18+.
