Lethbridge College is seeking a Payroll Specialist to join the Financial Services team. The Payroll Specialist is responsible for processing semi-monthly payroll for 1000+ employees that includes unionized and non-unionized staff. The ideal candidate will have current, broad-based experience in the complete payroll cycle process and systems, benefits and tax procedures. This position will participate in the review and analysis of current payroll processes and systems, we welcome your ideas on how to do things differently and better.
In addition, the Payroll Specialist will produce, analyze and interpret reports and data related to payroll functions, and act as a payroll representative with specific projects when required.

Job Duties

Duties include, but not limited to:

  • Prepare and process full cycle payroll in accordance to laws and regulations for a unionized and non-unionized environment for 1000 + employees
  • Reconcile monthly benefits statements and payments
  • Complete journal entries, reconcile and prepare reports for both payroll and benefits
  • Reconcile payroll accounts on a month-end and year-end basis
  • Prepare all government related forms and records
  • Ensure the payroll department, HR and Senior Managers are aware of all developments and legislation surrounding payroll, pensions and benefits. Ensure all legislation is implemented and adhered to including system changes
  • Undertake month end and year end procedures including T4 processing, Local Authorities Pension year end and WCB annual reporting. Ensure that commitments are met with reconciliations and internal and external audit compliance are met at all times
  • Responsible for ensuring pay awards, salary changes and other payroll activities are met with the specified time- frames
  • Manage regular preparations of relevant management reports, including weekly, monthly, quarterly and year end reports

Required Qualifications


  • 2 year diploma in Business Administration or Accounting; experience in a full-cycle payroll administration role, Certified Payroll Compliance Practitioner(PCP) certificate would be an asset
  • Advanced experience with MS Office and Human Resource Information System programs, specifically Excel
  • Experience processing: hourly, salaried and unionized payroll
  • Knowledge of Canadian Payroll Legislation
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, efficiency and ability to handle multiple priorities
  • Technical acumen utilizing administrative and payroll skills
  • Proven background of inter-department collaboration, through project work, and customer service
  • Ability to demonstrate working with complex situations where a high level of

interpersonal skills particularly within areas of conflict

  • Exhibit strong desire to enhance knowledge base. Willing to take on new tasks, learn new procedures and processes, and be innovative
