Pen Checker

We are a family owned feedlot located 15 minutes west of Lethbridge and 5 minutes south of Nobleford. We operate two feedlots, and have a capacity of 11,000 head.

Overview: The Pen Checker is responsible for ensuring early and accurate diagnosis of sick cattle along with general feedlot maintenance and tasks as required. The applicant must have a high understanding of cattle health, ensuring protocols for cattle treatment. The Pen Checker will ensure humane handling of all cattle, while providing low stress environments. The pen checker/lead hand will assist feedlot management in all aspects of feedlot, yard and pen maintenance. Processing and shipping cattle will be required.

Major Responsibilities:

• Team player
• Knowledge of cattle diseases, illnesses
• Check and treat cattle in a safe and timely manner
• Follow veterinary protocol
• Communicate to other staff major issues with cattle
• Report any issues with machinery used, fencing, bedding, etc.
• Prepare and move cattle from one area to another, including shipping and receiving cattle
• Be able to step up and help with cleaning, washing equipment, general labor
• Other duties as assigned by Feedlot Manager

Requirements

• Good attitude, self-motivation and common sense are pivotal
• Take direction and help in other areas when required
• Willing to learn, expand knowledge
• Working feedlot experience, minimum 2 years’ experience working with livestock
• Must have valid driver’s license
• Self-Motivated and have strong verbal communication skills
• References required

Salary: $20.00-$24.00 per hour
