Description

SUMMARY OF FUNCTION:

This position is responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of all parks, pathways,
sports fields, cemeteries, and related park amenities within the department’s area of responsibility.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Level I

Operates (at a basic level) the following equipment: chainsaw, front-end loaders, mowers (ride and push), forklift, hand tools, bucket trucks and snow removal equipment;

Supports the training, supervision and mentoring of department staff during the summer
months to ensure that day-to-day functions are followed and refers unusual problems or
policy matters to the Parks Foreman;

Maintains equipment and hand tools utilized in the performance of day-to-day tasks;

  1. Interacts and works with the full-time staff and seasonal summer staff performing work in the
    areas of the department’s responsibility;
  2. Performs construction and maintenance tasks; operates a power saw and brush cutter at
    ground level; falls and bucks trees and performs related park forestry operations;
  3. Assists in flower beds, shrub and tree pruning, outdoor ice rink maintenance, snow removal,
    sanding and other related duties;
  4. Ensures that City-owned washrooms are clean and tidy;
  5. Provides emergency assistance when required;
  6. Performs general inspections and maintenance of vehicles and equipment and documents
    any required maintenance; and
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.
  8. Completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent;
  9. No experience necessary;
  10. Education or experience in horticulture an asset;
  11. Valid Class 5 Driver’s License; with Q Endorsement preferred;
  12. Clean Driver’s Abstract;
  13. Standard First Aid;
  14. Chainsaw Safety and Cutting Techniques Training;
  15. Flag Person Certificate preferred;
  16. Fall Protection Certificate preferred;
  17. Physically able to perform required duties;
  18. Ability to plan, prioritize and manage own workload including the ability to tolerate frequent
    interruptions and still meet deadlines;
  19. Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
  20. Ability to understand and carry out instructions and perform manual tasks;
  21. Public relations, interpersonal and verbal communication skills;
  22. Previous experience in a municipal parks environment, golf course or landscaping would be
    an asset;
  23. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding department and municipal matters; and
  24. Subject to a criminal record check.

Level II

  1. Completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent;
  2. Minimum of six (6) months to one (1) year of experience in parks operations or related field;
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered;
  4. Education or experience in horticulture an asset;
  5. Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence with Q-Endorsement;
  6. Clean driver’s abstract;
  7. Fall Protection Certificate;
  8. Flag Person Certificate;
  9. Standard First Aid;
  10. WHMIS Certification;
  11. Chainsaw Safety and Cutting Techniques Training;
  12. CSA Playground Certificate OR Pesticide Applicator Certificate;
  13. Parks & Sport Fields Operator Level 1 Certificate;
  14. Ground Disturbance preferred;
  15. Confined Space preferred;
  16. Physically able to perform required duties;
  17. Ability to plan, prioritize and manage own workload, including the ability to tolerate frequent
    interruptions and still meet deadlines;
  18. Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
  19. Ability to understand and carry out instructions and perform manual tasks;
  20. Willingness to obtain Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Q-Endorsement;
  21. Public relations, interpersonal and verbal communication skills;
  22. Previous experience in a horticultural field, including but not limited to a municipal parks
    environment, golf course or landscaping, would be an asset;
  23. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding department and municipal matters; and
  24. Subject to a criminal record check.

Level III

  1. Completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent, supplemented by the Journeyman Landscape
    Horticulturist designation or enrolled in the Landscape Horticulturist Apprenticeship program;
  2. Minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of experience in parks operations or related field;
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered;
  4. Education or experience in horticulture an asset;
  5. Class 5 Driver’s License with Q-Endorsement;
  6. Clean driver’s abstract;
  7. Pesticide Applicator Certificate;
  8. Advanced Chainsaw Safety and Cutting Techniques Training;
  9. CSA Playground Certificate;
  10. Fall Protection Certificate;
  11. Flag Person Certificate;
  12. Parks & Sport Fields Operator Level 2 Certificate;
  13. Confined Space;
  14. Standard First Aid;
  15. WHMIS Certification;
  16. Ground Disturbance;
  17. Irrigation Certification preferred;
  18. Arboriculture Technician Certificate preferred;
  19. Proficient in Microsoft Office;
  20. Ability to plan, prioritize and manage own workload, including the ability to tolerate frequent
    interruptions and still meet deadlines;
  21. Ability to lead a crew;
  22. Physically able to perform required duties;
  23. Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
  24. Ability to understand and carry out instructions and perform manual tasks;
  25. Willingness to obtain Class 3 with Q-Endorsement;
  26. Public relations, interpersonal and verbal communication skills;
  27. Previous experience in a municipal parks environment, golf course or landscaping would be an
    asset;
  28. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding department and municipal matters; and
  29. Subject to a criminal record check.
