MAINTENANCE WORKER
Clarion Pointe Hotel Medicine Hat – Choice Hotels

Position: Maintenance Worker
Employment Type: Full-Time / Part-Time
Rate of Pay: $17.00–$20.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications
Schedule: Day, evening and weekend availability may be required
POSITION SUMMARY
Clarion Pointe Hotel Medicine Hat, part of the Choice Hotels family of brands, is seeking a dependable, hands-on Maintenance Worker to join our team.
The Maintenance Worker is responsible for the day-to-day upkeep, preventative maintenance and minor repairs of the hotel to ensure guest rooms, public areas, equipment and facilities remain safe, clean, functional and available for our guests.
The successful candidate should be comfortable troubleshooting maintenance issues, completing repairs independently, responding to guest and Front Desk requests, and maintaining the property according to Choice Hotels brand standards.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform day-to-day maintenance and repairs throughout the hotel.
- Complete preventative maintenance according to established schedules and Choice Hotels brand standards.
- Inspect guest rooms and promptly address maintenance deficiencies to ensure rooms remain available for sale.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests from the Front Desk, Housekeeping, management and hotel guests.
- Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs involving plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, drywall, painting, carpentry and general building maintenance.
- Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting on HVAC and air-handling equipment.
- Assist with maintenance of boilers, mechanical systems and other hotel equipment within the employee's training and qualifications.
- Inspect and maintain doors, windows, locks, cabinets, furniture, fixtures and other hotel assets.
- Complete painting, drywall repair, grouting, caulking and other cosmetic repairs as required.
- Assist with minor repairs to kitchen equipment and appliances where appropriate.
- Maintain the swimming pool, hot tub and pool facilities in a clean, safe and orderly condition, including required routine checks.
- Monitor and report equipment malfunctions and potential safety hazards.
- Understand the locations of emergency water, electrical and gas shut-offs.
- Assist with hotel fire and life-safety procedures, inspections, documentation and drills.
- Complete required fire extinguisher, health and safety, equipment and preventative-maintenance reports.
- Assist with snow and ice removal around hotel entrances, sidewalks and parking areas.
- Maintain hotel grounds and exterior areas.
- Perform minor janitorial and clean-up duties inside and outside the property when required.
- Assist other departments when necessary to support guest service and hotel operations.
- Respond courteously and professionally to guest requests.
- Report suspicious activity, emergencies, safety concerns and major equipment failures immediately to management.
- Maintain an organized maintenance shop, tools, equipment and supplies.
- Follow all Occupational Health & Safety requirements and hotel safety procedures.
- Utilize all applicable Choice Hotels tools, resources, systems and brand standards required for the position.
- Record completed maintenance work and outstanding issues on a daily basis.
- Help identify recurring maintenance problems and recommend preventative solutions.
- Perform other maintenance-related duties as assigned by management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- Previous hotel, commercial building, apartment, property or facility maintenance experience is preferred.
- Strong hands-on general maintenance and troubleshooting ability.
- Working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, drywall, painting, grouting, boilers, mechanical equipment and general building maintenance is preferred.
- Carpentry knowledge is considered an asset.
- Pool maintenance experience is considered an asset.
- Relevant trade, maintenance or safety certifications are considered an asset.
- Ability to identify problems and determine practical solutions.
- Good organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple maintenance requests.
- Ability to communicate effectively with management, employees and guests.
- Must be able to speak, read, write and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position and follow safety instructions.
- Professional, dependable and guest-service oriented.
MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to take direction from management and prioritize assigned duties.
- Ability to remain focused while dealing with interruptions and urgent maintenance requests.
- Ability to interact with guests in a courteous and professional manner.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Some heavy lifting is required.
- Must be comfortable working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- May be required to work with maintenance chemicals and hazardous materials in accordance with applicable safety procedures.

We are looking for someone who takes pride in maintaining a property properly. The ideal candidate is reliable, practical, organized and hands-on, with the ability to notice problems before they become larger repairs.
Because maintenance directly affects the guest experience, the successful candidate should understand the importance of keeping guest rooms, the pool and hot tub, public areas, mechanical equipment and the overall hotel in excellent working condition.
REPORTING
Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor / General Manager
The Maintenance Worker works under general direction while being expected to independently prioritize and complete routine maintenance tasks and respond appropriately to urgent maintenance issues.
