First Nations, Métis & Inuit Teacher Coordinator
Medicine Hat Public School Division invites applications for the position of First Nations, Métis & Inuit Teacher Coordinator, for the 2026-27 school year. This role provides system level leadership and support for schools, and works collaboratively with a team of support workers to serve the Division in four key areas: supporting cultural identity, belonging, and connection; leading schools in growing foundational knowledge about Truth and Reconciliation; working with schools to enhance the current curriculum and instruction; and supporting strong cultural teachings within the Division. The First Nations, Métis & Inuit Teacher Coordinator will recognize and support the Division's fundamental goal to continually improve education outcomes and create opportunities for First Nations, Métis and Inuit students in MHPSD, and support Indigenous students in achieving success in their educational programs.
The key responsibilities of the First Nations, Métis & Inuit Teacher Coordinator include, but are not limited to:
- Provide supports for First Nations, Métis and Inuit student success,
- Work to ensure all MHPSD students have knowledge, understanding and respect of the rich diversity of First Nations, Métis and Inuit cultures, languages and histories, the importance of Treaties, and the legacy of residential schools,
- Engage and support First Nations, Métis and Inuit students in fulfilling their vision for a K-12 education system that honours Indigenous history, cultures, languages and perspectives,
- Build strong relationships both within the Division and with ministries and organizations such as the First Nations and First Nation organizations, the Métis Settlements General Council, the Métis Nation of Alberta, and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada,
- Provide consultative support for Division and school-based teams as required, and
- Reporting to the Associate Superintendent – Learning & Student Supports, this role will implement the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Strategic Plan that supports the MHPSD Four Year Plan, the goals of Alberta Education, and Professional Practice Standards. Foundational to this work will be the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and the Calls to Action.
Position Requirements :
- Bachelor of Education Degree with Alberta teaching certification preferred, and a Master's degree or pursuing this would be considered an asset,
- At least three years of previous experience working with school-based teams and community partners supporting First Nations, Métis and Inuit students and families,
- In-depth knowledge of traditional First Nations, Métis and Inuit realities, culture, community and available resources,
- Strong knowledge of pedagogy and instructional programming,
- Knowledge of Programs of Study, Professional Practice Standards and related First Nations, Métis and Inuit TQS competency,
- Strong computer skills with ability to learn software programs such as Powerschool and Edsby,
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a collaborative team,
- Knowledgeable about current community supports and resources, as well as how to navigate those systems,
- Valid driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
