The Electric Operations department began a fire hardening project in 2022 in response to an increased risk to grass fires. Phase 1 of the fire hardening project was applied to our transmission wood pole structures situated in dry environments, which included wrapping 622 poles. The project applied an inert mesh around the pole that expands and provides a thermal barrier in the event of a fire. We tested it - it works. The expanded intumescent coating turns into pure carbon and is environmentally inert. THAT'S INNOVATION, MEDICINE HAT STYLE!
