Full job description

A local not-for-profit daycare in Medicine Hat is seeking a committed and community-minded individual interested in joining our Board of Directors and serving in the role of Board Chair.

This is an opportunity to provide leadership to a local non-profit organization while supporting the continued operation and future direction of our childcare centre. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with fellow Board members and the Executive Director to support effective governance, organizational planning, and accountability.

About the Role

In accordance with the Society’s bylaws, the Chairperson is elected by the Board of Directors from among its members. We are seeking an individual willing to join the Board and be considered for election to the Chair position.

The Board Chair provides leadership and coordination to the Board and serves as its official spokesperson. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership and direction to the Board of Directors
  • Coordinating the business and activities of the Board
  • Working with Board members to prepare meeting agendas and ensure Board minutes and official correspondence are distributed
  • Establishing a schedule of regular Board meetings
  • Calling special meetings when necessary
  • Helping ensure Board decisions and responsibilities are followed through
  • Ensuring the requirements of the Society’s bylaws are fulfilled
  • Serving as a liaison between the Board, Executive Director, and other stakeholders as appropriate
  • Supporting thoughtful discussion and decision-making regarding the current needs and future direction of the organization

Who We’re Looking For

We would welcome someone who:

  • Has an interest in non-profit governance, childcare, education, or community service
  • Is comfortable facilitating meetings and helping a group move decisions forward
  • Communicates professionally and respectfully
  • Is organized, dependable, and able to follow through on commitments
  • Can approach challenges objectively and collaboratively
  • Is comfortable asking questions, seeking information, and helping the Board make informed decisions

Previous Board or leadership experience would be an asset but is not required. Orientation and support can be provided to someone who is interested in learning more about non-profit governance.

Commitment

This is an unpaid volunteer position. The Board meets regularly, with additional communication or meetings occurring when required.

The position offers an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a long-standing community organization and help guide the Society through its next stage.
