The City of Medicine Hat is hiring three Water & Sewer System Operators - Entry for temporary positions to join our Environmental Utilities team. In this role, you'll be involved in the operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of the City's Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Systems infrastructure. This is a great entry-level opportunity for individuals who are eager to contribute to essential services in a dynamic and team-oriented environment.
Your key responsibilities
- Assist in the operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution and wastewater collection systems infrastructure.
- Operate and maintain department equipment, tools, and Class 2 vehicles in a safe and efficient manner.
- Respond to public inquiries with professionalism and clarity.
- Assist in locating, diagnosing, and repairing system faults to maintain service continuity.
- Support the training of junior operators when assigned.
- Perform weekend duties and call-out responsibilities as needed.
- Undertake other duties as assigned by the Field Operations Supervisor or designate.
What you bring
- Strong knowledge of current industry practices, materials, equipment, and methods used in the installation, operation, and repair of water and wastewater systems.
- Familiarity with Occupational Health and Safety regulations and City policies.
- Ability to effectively operate heavy equipment, including Class 2 vehicles, and maintain tools and equipment safely.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with a demonstrated ability to maintain accurate work records.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand and execute both written and oral instructions.
- Capacity to work independently, with minimal supervision, while maintaining high standards of safety and quality.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in a variety of outdoor conditions, including extreme weather.
Qualifications
- Successful completion of Grade 12 or a high school equivalency diploma.
- Possession of a valid Class 3 Alberta motor vehicle operator's license with air endorsement and a satisfactory driving record.
- Valid Standard First Aid certificate and a current Defensive Driving Course.
- Alberta Environment Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Level I certification is required within the first year of employment.
- This position has been identified as Safety Sensitive and requires the completion of a satisfactory pre-employment drug screen, which includes testing for cannabis use.
