First Nations, Métis and Inuit Support Worker

Medicine Hat Public School Division (MHPSD) is seeking a dynamic, adaptable, and culturally connected Part-Time (0.6 FTE) First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) Support Worker. This position complements an existing team member's transition to part-time and has the potential to increase to full-time. The successful candidate will join a well-rounded and robust team dedicated to expanding and strengthening FNMI supports and services across our division.

Working under the guidance of the FNMI Teacher Coordinator and collaborating closely with school administrators, classroom teachers, and community members, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing learning, truth, and reconciliation, as well as providing culturally responsive support to students and families.

We are looking for a relational leader with strong cultural connections who will cultivate and sustain respectful, reciprocal, and accountable partnerships with Indigenous learners, their families, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and various local community groups. An understanding of child development is essential. This candidate will design engaging, curriculum-connected, and age-appropriate presentations while fostering a welcoming, culturally safe environment for Indigenous learners.

Key Responsibilities & Role Focus

1. Culturally Responsive Student & Family Support

• Holistic & Culturally Responsive Care: Provide grounded, culturally responsive support to FNMI students, honoring their social, emotional, and cultural needs within the school environment.
• Family & Community Engagement: Will support reciprocal and respectful relationships between home and school, facilitating meaningful dialogue, welcoming FNMI families, and connecting them to community resources and cultural supports.
• Cultural Safety & Belonging: Help cultivate inclusive, culturally safe learning spaces where Indigenous languages, identities, and traditions are celebrated and respected.

2. Educational Programming & Classroom Engagement

• Curriculum-Connected Presentations: Design, adapt, and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate presentations and activities aligned with Alberta Programs of Study.
• Collaborative Design: Work under the pedagogical guidance of FNMI Teacher Coordinator, and bring cultural and community-based knowledge into reciprocal collaboration with the pedagogical and curricular expertise of educators.
• Child Development Lens: Apply a solid understanding of child and youth development to ensure learning experiences are suitable for various age groups and learning needs.

3. Collaboration, Accountability & Growth

• Openness to Feedback: Demonstrate high adaptability and a genuine desire to receive feedback, continuously refining programming to best serve students and support classroom teachers.
• Division Vision Alignment: Follow and actively contribute to the direction set by the division and the FNMI leadership team, upholding the findings and Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
• Team Synergy: Work responsively as part of a collaborative team to strengthen the reach and impact of FNMI services division-wide.

Qualifications & Competencies

Education & Experience

• Preferred Education: Completion of post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Human Services, Educational Assistant, Bachelor of Education, or a related field.
• An equivalent combination of relevant education, lived experience, cultural knowledge, and community leadership will be considered.
• Experience: Experience working directly with children, youth, and families in an educational, social service, or community-based setting.
• Driver's Licence: A valid driver's licence and vehicle are required, as the employee will be required to drive to various school locations throughout the day and week. Compensation for mileage is included in the employment contract.

• Cultural Knowledge: Demonstrates knowledge of First Nations Métis, and Inuit communities, histories, local protocols and resources, along with a commitment to continued learning about diverse First Nations, Métis and Inuit experiences.
• Relational Approach: Demonstrated ability to build trusted, culturally responsive relationships with students, parents, Elders, and community partners.
• Developmental Awareness: Solid understanding of child and youth development and age-appropriate pedagogy.
• Flexibility & Growth Mindset: A high degree of adaptability, openness to learning, and a desire to integrate professional feedback from educators and administrators.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency with or ability to learn educational software (e.g., PowerSchool, Edsby) and basic digital media tools for presentations.
