Position: Facilities and Maintenance Summer Student
Location: CEC
Start Date: May 25th (tentative)
End Date: August 28th (tentative)
Hours:
40 hours per week (May 25th - June 26th)
30 hours per week (June 30th - August 28th)
The Opportunity:
We are seeking a motivated and hands-on summer student to join the Facilities and Maintenance team at the Catholic Board of Education. This position is ideal for a student pursuing or considering a career in the skilled trades (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, electrical, or general maintenance), and offers practical, real-world experience in facility operations within a school environment.
The successful candidate will support the maintenance and custodial needs of the division while developing foundational skills in building upkeep, safety practices, and basic repair work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with minor repairs and general maintenance tasks (e.g., basic carpentry, painting, equipment upkeep)
- Assisting and actioning irrigation repairs
- Support trades-related work under supervision, gaining exposure to multiple maintenance disciplines
- Perform all physical aspects of the role (e.g., lifting up to 50 lbs, moving equipment and materials)
- Work independently and demonstrate initiative, self-direction, and reliability with minimal supervision
- Exhibit strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with school staff and students
- Maintain a safe and organized work environment in accordance with workplace safety standards
Qualifications and Skills:
- Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program (must provide proof of enrollment)
- Previous maintenance experience is an asset
- Interest in pursuing a career in the skilled trades or facilities maintenance
- Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and workplace safety protocols
- Proficiency in basic technology, including Gmail and internet navigation
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in a safe and efficient manner
- Provide a successful Police Information Check and Intervention Record Check
This role will require the successful candidate to operate division owned vehicles. Must have a valid class 5 driver's license as well as a clean drivers abstract.
